I want to build a rack based 3 node proxmox / ceph cluster on an absolute shoe string budget. I have tons of 3.5" 4TB+ drives that I would like to use.

I need a recommendation for the following:

-3u or thinner rack mountable server / chassis
-can take 8+ 3.5" sata drives per node minimum
-pcie expansion slots so I can add 10Gb Nic if needed
-newish CPU and can take or add a good amount of memory (ecc preferable but not necessary)
-does not sound like a jet taking off as this will be in a closet in my office next to my bedroom
-<$500 per node for the three nodes if possible (way less is preferable if possible)
-not averse to second hand or refurbished hw (ebay etc)
-dont care about redundant psus

Apologies if this is a FAQ but I am clueless as to how to approach this and what is available in 2023. (Or where the sweet spot for price performance is today)

Not sure if you can get what you want in the price range you have but Wendle from levelonetechs just last week posted a potential option you might think about.
"Can We Build a Home Server Out of Mini PCs?"
