I have an older SC846E1-R900B. The newer version of this chassis, SC846BE16-R920B, has an option for a rear 2-bay 2.5" hdd kit, part number MCP-220-84606-0N. Looks like it fits in the vertical slot where the old chassis had an optical drive. Since both chassis are very similar, I'm curious if the MCP-220-84606-0N will fit? Can anyone confirm? Supermicro's website doesn't officially list this option for my older model 846.

Hello, I did contact supermicro with a similar condition, if the back window can be changed, the newer models are different and also in the power supply housing area where the 2.5" drives attach. There answer is no.

I was in the same situation as you (E1-R900B chassis) and ended up buying the MCP-220-84606-0N as it looked like it would fit. It definitely does not fit. The chassis is made to fit a CD drive at the rear, and the dimensions for the slot are different. I thought about cutting the rear window up to make it fit but decided against it.

Thanks! I've used those before and they work okay.

found some pictures that make it very clear that the old vs new are different enough the 2-bay 2.5" hdd kit option won't fit:
