I'm thinking of getting the following server from dell. What do you think of the price? It refurb but includes 5 year pro support. It's more then what i budgeted for but i figured I can sell some of my old servers to get some money to pay this one down.

My though is making this my primary ESXI host, running all my home/business VMs plus all my dev vms. I'm thinking ill convert one of my three other servers into a freenas box and load it up with all my other HDDs and use it for data and backup.

I got this brand new for about $5500
as you do have more CPU and RAM , as well as more HDD, I would say it is not bad price for this setup.

@vl1969 thanks for the post. As far as I could tell based on ebay prices i found for components of the system I thought the price was reasonable.
How have you found the power usage of the system? Based on the newer CPU and memory i would expect this system to idle lower then my older e5-26xx v1/v2 setups.

frankly, in my place of work we do not really sweat about power usage ;)
they have been running 4 10-15 yo machines here when I came to work.
and we have a lot more power hungry stuff in the factory that would put any of this servers to shame.

also not sure about idling as I suspect my servers do not idle too much.
I run 2 of those in Hyper-V failover cluster.

that is MS server 2012 R2 Hyper-V with Starwind vSAN as I do not have hardware SAN here.
the cluster runs one of my AD/DC/DHCP/DNS
a file server VM
a SQL server VM and a bunch of others special use VMs. we are Microsoft shop here so all Windows and couple of DOS machines :p:eek:

so far, the only issue I have is that I might not have done a good job setting all up, so thing glitches on occasion and need a good kick in the A#$ to get back on track.
other than that I can not fault DELL much. the tech support have been very prompt the few times I needed it so far.

Just for comparison, you should give Xbyte a call. Really good prices on Dell servers. They sell as refurb because they've been open box but most of the stuff they sell has actually never been racked.

I've got a slew of outlet 730XD's (with 5 year prosupport) running in dual node HC environments. I cannot say enough good things about them, and the outlet is what made it possible within budget for each client. Make sure you call in. They can normally get an extra 10% off the price. Most replaced C2100's from the outlet, which have been demoted to backup / replication servers. I suspect the 730XD's to age out not because of power, but warranty.

yes, xByte is good, but in my case it was not an option.
the owner does not want to deal with anything but new things.
and overall cost saving were not overly great to be the determining factor. we have a long term account with DELL so we get some discounts and deals directly. the xByte vs DELL quotes where about 1500$ appart.
so we just bought it from DELL directly.
