Hi - I'm starting to plan my video surveillance setup and will need a POE switch.
I would like at least a 16port gigabit switch and prefer a 1U Rack mount to go into my rack. I know there are POE injectors but I'd prefer something a little more feature rich that is managed.

Any thoughts on this 3com on ebay? Pretty cheap and looks like a little less power draw then the Enterasys. I'm debating between the two - or may a 3rd option? Thanks

Enterasys

I have the non Poe version of the 3com and also the 4800g version. Have not had any issues with either one. They can also be upgraded with 10g modules which is nice

Did you already buy your cameras? Make sure whichever switch you purchase is compatible with the camera's PoE requirements. There currently are 2 major standards. The 802.3af PoE standard provides up to 15.4 W of DC power while the newer 802.3at PoE standard also known as PoE+ or PoE plus, provides up to 25.5 W of power. The later standard is much more expensive and harder to find a compatible switch.

I use a Dell 7024P switch which has up to 30.8 watts of power per port along with a built in 800 watt power supply.

I use a GS752TPS Netgear.

It too will go to 30.8 on 8 ports, and 15.4 on others but it's also a 48 port switch, and I'm not sure total power I think it was around 300 or 400w, something I won't achieve with my 12 or so cams :) I think only 3 are the Ubuiti higher wattage units.

BUT they're only $300 or so on ebay.. def worth it IMHO if you have a lot of cameras. 8 ports @ 30w is crazy, I don't have any use for any of that now but it's nice to know it's there :)

thanks all - I haven't picked out my camera's yet. So many options...
I was hoping to get away with a managed POE switch for under $100 but I guess we'll see based on which camera.
I'll report back once I sort that out. I didn't realize the different POE wattage standards, thank you for pointing that out - could have been a mistake buying a POE switch now.

I hooked up my 'new to me' 5 or so year old PANSONIC commercial security camera (*that was nib*) that's POE... OMG, it's like a DSLR in a dome :) It's insanely crisp, and clear compared to the $100 cameras... haha The only downfall is the 2m-8mm and focus are done manually so it's still a fixed camera not a PTZ like I thought. BUT, it does have a built in dehumidifier so that'll kick ass in winter/snow :)
