I'm using Optiplex 7050 as a small server, and generally I'm happy with it. However, it came with i5-6600T, and from time to time I feel that I might have a use for a slightly more powerful cpu, with more threads. I keep watching ebay for i7-7700 (which is the most powerful CPU listed on the compatibility list), but I can't find justification for a ~$100 upgrade.
On the other hand, e3-1230v3 can be found for $30-$40. This is also a Kaby Lake CPU, which on paper looks to be very close in specs. My biggest concerns are that there may be some differences making the processors not interchangeable, and higher TDP (85W v.s. 65W), which may cause problems with heat removal.
Has anybody tried making such an upgrade? Will it work?
