Opinion: Is $120 for a PWS-920P-SQ worth it?

I swapped my 1k units for the 920 SQs and was very happy. Much, much, much quieter.

I can't speak to efficiency -- I didn't look beforehand -- the WAF went way up though.

I'm also curious how much quieter the SQ is from the 1R. I think I got the 1R for $60 and it's already pretty quiet (at least compared to the stock PSU)

Yeah this is what I'm wondering. I wonder if I just should hold out for a 501 series or go with the 920SQ. Both seem rare as heck.

I couldn't resist and purchased 2, will compare them to my 1R whenever it arrives.

501 is rare on ebay.
I bought 2 for $120 including shipping.
picked 501P due on the system pulling on 100W max ( average is 50-60W). power consumption reduced 20W compared 1K (gold)
the noise reduction( open space, not in closed rack enclosure) is very notice-able during hot weather and not notice-able during winter-time :p.

you can pull SM PSU testing PDF file, which shown eff versus load.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/powersupply/80PLUS/80PLUS_PWS-501P-1R.pdf
50W 88.23% eff
100W 93.01% eff
250W 94.44% eff
500W 92.47% eff

920P-SQ -> http://www.supermicro.com/products/powersupply/80PLUS/80PLUS_PWS-920P-SQ.pdf
93W 87.68% eff
185W 92.51% eff
460W 94.27% eff
< 93W, I assume the worst case is 80% eff

either 920P-SQ or 501P are good, which is lowest $ betwen both.

I was looking 741P (platinum) too...

To answer my own question: It was most DEFINITELY worth it! I got the 920SQ model and it's running VERY quietly with the fans only spinning around 2000rpm. I put two of them in and the noise level dropped drastically in comparison to the single 721P I had before. That one fan in the 721p was running almost 10k rpm all the time and it was enough to drive you bat crap crazy if you had it in your working space. Now it can comfortably run in the corner of my 10x20 office without disturbing my already jacked mental state one bit! Thanks for all the feedback, guys!

just my opinion:
741P (Platinum) or 501P (platinum) gives the same result since not pulling more than 50% capacity..
741p is less $$ than 920SQ :p on ebay.. Supermicro 740W Platinum Level Power Supply PWS 741P 1R | eBay - $109 and accepting best offer

was able to get $120 for two 501p including shipping, 501P is hard to find.
very satisfied with SM Platinum PSU....
my plan was getting 741P or 501P, well finally got 501P..

btw.. 920SQ is more common than 501P on ebay.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just wanted to say "Thank you!!" This is the thread that brought me to STH. I had four PWS-920P-SQ delivered yesterday. I cannot believe how incredibly quiet these are!

My first SuperMicro was an SC933 many, many years ago. It is still up and running as an unRAID box. I'm going to replace it with a CSE-836TQ just so I can buy a couple more of these power supplies to quiet things down a bit.
