My first server build featured an Intel dual socket 771 board. It required the application of the supplied rubber pad to the underside of the board. More recently I'm putting together an even older Intel dual pentium III contraption (why? lol). It also calls for, iirc, 2 bumper pads stuck on the bottom of the board at designated spots. It did not ce with these pads, so I bought some clear, reasonably hard self adhering 3m pads from Home Depot. Assuming these are appropriate, why are they needed? Is it simply because both of those older boards were 12" x 13" (SSI-EEB/SSI-EEB), and need extra support to prevent shorting the board when inserting expansion cards? My only other server/ws build features a Supermicro uATX lga2066 board and no bumpers are called for.

TIA.
