I finally bought a pair of 2696v3 for the new build since by westmere dually - 5680s - is giving a little trouble.

I had hoped to wait for dual EPYCs but i had to do something more quickly and couldn't for the gradual availability of EPYC parts.

So what i have coming is the 2696 v 3. I Have a 1000 Wat PSU by FSP full modular and i have the board an X10 DAX. Case is the Cosmos II that i got as a refurb a while back.

Now have to settle on OS Drive - Was thinking a 400 GB P3500 - comments, opinions welcome. Storage is anyone of my 6 or 8 TB drives as i now slowly moving over to 8TB HGST Heliums.

And memory - was thinking of getting DDR4 2400 which should work right it'll just run at 2133 but at least if and when i move to brad well when they come down i will have ddr 2400.

Anyway any opinions ware welcome

thanks

2696 v3 ES is now around $600 so not bad for the price. with dual 2696 v3, you will surely beat one 1950x as well as comparably priced epyc dual system.

Update with one photo so far. I'll get more up - just been busy with getting this built and cleanup/recovery from Irma. GPU Is MSI 1060 6GB Gaming Plus - got that little while back and it was my dual westmere box. Drive is Intel P3700 400 GB Mounted two slots down from the GPU. Tomorrow i'll install the Noctuas and then fire it up - crossing fingers.

Update - got it to boot this morning - But i had to short the pwr pins as it appears my power swtich on the case is bad. It doesn't do anything. Will have to call coolermaster and see if they will send me a new one. Besides replacing the top panel with the pwr switch do i have any other workarounds for a pwr switch and besides manually shorting the pins? thanks

A bad power switch! I have thought that was my prob before but it was me putting them on the wrong header pins.

Doesn't that board have ipmi? Can use that.

Yeah i first had the pwr switch on the wrong pins cause i read the JF1 in the opposite direction. I was so sure that was it but then putting on pins 1 and 2 and I get nothing. Now with nothing on the JF1 header - it starts just fine as soon as i hit PSU switch in the back. As best as i can tell this board doesn't have IPMI at least i don't see in bios. I'll keep looking. In any event it posts and i'll get some more photos up. Next task is to W10 installed and then all my software from Firefox and Chrome to Handbrake, Premiere, PowerDirector etc

More Photos and the final build list:
Case - Cosmos II - refurb from Coolermaster a while back which may or may not explain the pwr switch issue.
Board X10DAX - got this as an open box from Newegg so saved a bunch. And i bough a second one too as open box so have a spare.
CPUs - Pair of QGN7s E5-2696V3
PSU FSP Aurum PT 1000 Watt Full Modular
GPU MSI GTX 1060 6GB Gaming Plus
Ram Micron 8GB x2 DDR4 2400 - More is on the way.
OS Drive Intel P3700 400GB - *fixed*
Burner - An Asus DVD/BluRay Burner I pulled from my dual Westmere box - from back when i was ripping a lot of DVDs
CPU Coolers - Pair Noctuas NH-U12DX i4

Right now just connected to an old Acer monitor until i move it and connect it to my Ultrawide LG 3440X1440.

Windows is loading now So what numbers or Benches do y'all want to see? Me - I only care how fast it is on Handbrake. But if y'all want something let me know.

Handbrake doesn't use GPU?

What about other software for enocoding?transcoding? Surely something has to use GPU(s)?

Handbrake to my understanding is mostly CPU intensive. Also it's not going to utilize all 36 cores either. I also use Premiere and Cyberlink PowerDirector but i doubt i'll get those loaded tonight. Probably have to wait till the weekend.
