Hello,

I am writing to ask what is a good book or resource to learn how to use a server?

I decided I wanted a server so I purchased one.
I have not connected it yet as I still need rack for it and parts as I am upgrading it.
I dont know what the OS is that the server has on it, but I would assume likely Windows version.

I have been reading info from the manufactures website trying to understand the server but info is more about setup than actual usage.

Hoping there is a good resource on the web to give crash course in servers.

Thanks
Zander

A server is defined mostly by what it will be used for - Define your needs, and once you have that figured out, the hardware part is much easier to determine.

Hello,

Thanks for the fast reply to my post.

The server is going to be used for running private game servers for games such as Rust, for one example and several other games.
I had Rust Server on my personal PC but running Server for Rust and Rust itself to play was causing issues.
So I purchased the server so my buddies and I can play the games without the BS of Cheaters in some games.

I did not feel like renting a server which is Why I purchased one.
Thanks

There's really only a couple of options. Windows or Linux. If you want stability most go the Linux route.

HW depends on what you want to do though. It breaks down into compute, storage or a blend of the two.

For me I went Linux since networks are based on it from everyday devices like your car, phone, and so on. My goal was to combine several devices into a single box. I collapsed 6 different devices into mine. Nas, TV/dvr, router, switch, wireless, etc.

Once you have a foundation built it's easy to add more to it.

That's where I would start and I would I ask myself:
What were the issues?
What was causing them?
How could the issues be resolved?

Hello,

Thanks for fast reply to my post.

The issues were my pc could not handle both running a rust server on my pc as cpu was not strong enough.
It got really slow and laggy when 12 of us tried to play at same time.

That Is one reason that I purchased a server the other day.
I have a new server cpu coming in a few days and a lot more memory.
I verified with the Manufacturer all items I purchased will work with the server and wont even need a new bios.
This way I can use server to run the Rust Server instance on the server.

Since I have never used a real server ever I was looking for some sort of Book or resource where I can quickly learn how to use one.
I assumed it is not the same as Windows or Linux home pc os.

Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for the fast reply and help.

My server has max 8 bays and I think only 2 are populated.
I have not touched the server yet except to carry it in the door.
I then ordered new cpu and memory to change out the other is its specs were to low.
So I have 6x32gb sticks of memory coming and the best CPU the hardware can handle according to Manufacturer.

The rack I am told will take about a week to get to me.
No idea where it is coming from.

Thanks

It can be. Well, not really with windows since they want you to use server editions for the licensing fees.

As for the game...if it runs natively on Linux then it's the most efficient option. The other option would be to spin up a windows VM inside of Linux using virtualbox and share that for gaming sessions.

It sounds like you've got a specific use case in mind for the hardware you have on hand already, and that's great. Not sure how you learn best but if video tutorials are something that work for you then I'd suggest checking out some youtube videos from some folks that specialize in gaming servers. Jeff from Craft Computing comes to mind. While this won't give you broad knowledge of concepts and theories, it can give you the specific information needed to use the tools you already have on hand to accomplish your specific goal. Then later on if you find you enjoy the process of using and expanding your server knowledge you can tackle some broader subjects by taking some proper courses without any pressure to achieve your one current goal.

Hey.

Thanks for all the tips I will spend some time watching some youtube videos.
Guess it depends on what OS the server has installed on it.
As said I get the upgrade parts this week and hope to have rack by friday.

Thanks again
