I recently decided to install nas4free on a new lab NAS, and wanted it to have a 10GbE connection. I decided to install a Mellanox ConnectX-2 EN card in the ASrock C2750D4I, certainly nothing fancy but I wanted a little ZFS backup box.

Heading over to the page I managed to download the newest version: NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.3.0.2.1349.iso

It has been about three months since I last built a NAS4Free box so I was excited to see the new features added. To my dismay, something big was missing: my ConnectX-2 EN card!

I do keep a local repository of a lot of OS images (just for times like these) and installed from NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.2.0.1.972.iso which is what I used the last time I utilized NAS4Free.

That version had no issue with 10GbE Mellanox Ethernet!

Just a word of advice for those looking to NAS4Free ZFS with 10GbE - either spend more on a 10GbE card or use the older version.

Its likely just ConnectX-2. I'd read elsewhere that freeBSD dropped support for ConnectX-2 in the current release. ConnectX-3 EN cards would probably still work.

Is it something with reporting in case they accidentally removed it? ConnectX2 is still a pretty good card that people have...

That can't be it - current NAS4free is still based on freeBSD9.3 (unless the release you loaded is newer).

Don't know how hard it is to add drivers to freeBSD. Been a long time since I tried anything on any flavor BSD. But if you are adventurous: Mellanox Products: Mellanox OFED for FreeBSD

nas4free is based on FreeBSD 9.3. I don't think Mellanox is mainline in that release? Might need 10? Speculating here. Maybe a dev snuck mellanox into that older build?
