You didn't specify what OS you're running but I'll assume omnios with Napp-it as a GUI:
The linked page has requirements stating "SMB protocol version 3.x, including SMB 3.x signing". Unfortunately, illumos based OS' only support SMB 2.1 (and this only as of a couple of months ago) so I doubt it will work. It's the same issue when trying to use as a datastore for Hyper-V VMs as, it too, requires SMB3.

I think you could set up a time machine share over AFP though if you can't get SMB to work. If you do, post how for others.

OSX 10.12 supports Timemachine over SMB but only SMB3 with some specials.
Currently you need the same tweaks for Timemachine like on a former OSX to make it working on any SMB server.

Nexenta included SMB3 in their NexentaStor5. They have upstreamed the current Illumos SMB 2.1 SMB so you can expect SMB3 also integrated in Illumos but with a delay.
