I have a MZ32-AR0 rev 3.0 board and 6 wd 20tb drives coming in. my case is a 2U 12 Bay Server Chassis CSE-826A-R920LPB IPASS backplane

the chassis lists "12x 3.5" hot-swap SAS/SATA drive bay with SES2 and Mini-i-Pass (SFF 8087) connectivity"

my question is which cable do I need?

looking at the mother board manual (https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/server_manual_MZ32-AR0_e_v3.0.pdf) I think I would be using ports
39 SLINK3 Slimline SAS 4i Connector
40 SLINK2 Slimline SAS 4i Connector
41 SLINK1 Slimline SAS 4i Connector
42 SLINK0 Slimline SAS 4i Connector

but i'm not exactly sure what a slimline sas 4i connector is.

Also I saw some warnings about not plugging sata drives into sas controllers without an interposer? is that relevant?

If it matters at all I intend to use openzfs

Looks to me like you want a SFF-8654 to SFF-8087 cable. Probably three of them (4i x 3 = 12) for a 12 drive "A" backplane.

Thanks! it was difficult finding one that was long enough, but I think this should work then?
