Hello bmacklin,

    sorry for the late reply...
It seems that you don´t have an appropriate OS to install mediatomb. The install script only works correctly on omnios and openindiana. What OS do you use?

I have the same problem. I've had it with the last version of OmniOS, 15006, and now I have it with the current version, 15008.

My installation "log" has been pasted below. Evidently, the installation of multiple sub components fail.

Mediatomb cannot start. When attempting to start the service in the napp-it GUI, nothing happens and it remains in maintenance mode.

    Code:
    root@NAS-SAN:~# wget -O - www.napp-it.org/mediatomb | sh

My problem has been solved. After I upgraded OmniOS from 1510006 to 1510008, I had to reboot into the new BE. After booting into the new BE, and repeating the installation, it succeeded.

Mediatomb could still not start immediately after installation, but after clearing the DB and config in the napp-it GUI, it could.

I tried to install mediatomb on Omnios 1510010, first on a fresh install with latest Napp-it (running on a virtual machine in VMWare 5.5), then on the latest prebuilt vmware image from gea. I experience the same problem on both, the service gets stuck in maintenance:
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last exited with status 127.

I tried to run the install script several times, but without any different outcome. No db or config to clear since it's a fresh installation.
I haven't had time to dig into the cause, anyone else experienced this?

The installer script is updated from time to time from Chris (the author of the installer). So you have to wait for Chris or to someone else who is checking which part of the installer fails. (I do not use Mediatomb myself and there are many dependencies).

    Hi Hotcpu6,

there has been a modification of the repo in the nappit installer-script to install midnight-commander. The repo has always been the repo of the University of Maryland, but it was offline for a while, so gea changed it to Joyent's repo.

To use Joyent's repo you first have to install pkgsrc and if this step is done before installing mediatomb, mediatomb installation fails (I haven't done the work to investigate why installation fails in detail).

But now the repo of the University of Maryland is online again, so gea changed the script back. I tried it yesterday (1st nappit-script, 2nd mediatomb-script) and got no problems with the installation of mediatomb, everything's working fine.

tried to install mediatomb on my napp it. Installation seems to have had issues ..

First start
mt-omnios-0.3.sh: line 166: /opt/local/bin/mediatomb: No such file or directory

Setting up service
There is a problem with mediatomb service!
Please look at the log-file -> /var/log/mediatomb.log

When I try to open the log file, log file does not exist

Napp it UI shows mediatomb service as in maintenance mode ..

Any pointers on what to do next?

mediatomb seems to be abandoned project :(
So instead of trying to make it work here, I think I should switch to serviio

What should I do to remove mediatomb setup? and should I do that before I install serviio addon?

Mediatomb is a contribution by Chris from zfs-server.de without any recent updates. As Chris switched from a forum to a blog the setup files are no longer available. I doubt that you will see updates.

While you can setup Mediatomb manually ot use another mediaserver on OmniOS, I would hesitate to do. Storage is one of the most sensible and critical server services. The huge advantage of the minimalistic Solaris/OmniOS approach is that there are no dependencies to any 3rd party software setups (everything is part of Solaris/OmniOS. Sun did a perfect job to include FC/iSCSI, NFS, SMB, Crossbow etc as genuine Solaris projects ). Even when the bootdisk dies without a backup, you simply need a new bootdisk, do a basic setup and import the pool to be online again after a few minutes, no system backup needed.

Any additional 3rd party service requires that you must either redo all setup steps after a crash (can be quite compicated then as you must care about newer OS and different software releases) or you must care about backup and a disaster recovery plan.

I would keep storage as simple as possible and add other services like web or mediaservices in a VM, either ontop of ESXi (virtualise everything including storage) or within OmniOS with LX zones (Linux container) or up from next OmbiOS with Bhyve, bhyve Hypervisor

    Thanks gea.

So how do I uninstall the components that have gone in for mediatomb? Is that necessary?

Is serviio by zos is done as LX zone and would be OK per your recommendation?

There is no uninstaller. If you want a clean system, go back to a former bootenvironment or reinstall OmniOS. But there is quite no interaction with the base OS as the software is quite based in the pkgin modules from Joyent. They use /opt for their software.

Servioo is an OmniOS setup and based on Java. None of them are completely independent from the OS (not based on VMs).

If you want to fully seperate storage and services, use ESXi as there is no interaction between VM environment, storage OS and other guest OS systems with other services (any OS like BSD, OSX, Linux, Solaris, Windows)
