So now I am having the same symptoms between both my ASRock D1541D4U-2O8R and SM X10SRH‑CLN4F on the same set of Samsung 850 Pro 512GB.

I passed both controllers in ESXi using the passthrough.map hack in both FreeNAS Corral, FreeNAS 11.0, NAS4Free 11.0 and Xpenology. All of these OSes will once in a while say there was something wrong with one of the SSDs, the hard drive was restarted, Xpenology would report cache misses, unexpected error occurred with the drives.

I then passed the drives to a Windows 10 VM, installed samsung magician and updated to the latest firmware. After that, I ran CyrstalMark, 9 passes, 3GB on each of the SSDs and I was able to sustain 550MB/sec sequential reads with no SSD flakiness.

What on earth is happening when I pass the controllers to Freebsd and Linux based VMs?

Pictures of NAS4Free and the SSDs just freaking out and reconnecting...
