On all screenshots of these controllers I see that they contain 512 MB of RAM. What does an HBA do with that amount of RAM? It is also not mentioned in the datasheet or manual. Is there a RAID function hidden somewhere?

The LSI9201-16i and 16e neither have a cache, they do have NVRAM to store some data on (512KB-ish)

None of the LSI HBA's have RAM (Cache).
There is a Supermicro SAS2008 controller with 16MB cache not a HBA but the iMR version that can be cross flashed to IT

Well, I don't have such an HBA, I just looked at some photos and there are 5 BGAs around the ASIC, more specifically Samsung K4T1G164QE-HCF7 on the photo I found. You can see the BGAs on the LSI site also. That specific chip is a 1Gbit DRAM with a 16bit bus, corresponding to 512 Mbytes of ECC protected RAM with a 72bit bus total, which makes sense. I just try to analyze these photos, I would like to get a better explanation on the purpose of these BGAs.

Looking LSI9201-16i those chips are buffers.
There will a tiny buffer between the ROC and SAS/SATA ports.

LSI9260 with 512MB cache chips
