Hey folks, I run old dell r730 with 24sff drives in it. Unfortunately I need to get rid of it and looking for replacement which will be shorter depth. I don't need 2CPU system, since this server was only used as NAS even without TrueNas or other system, pure ubuntu, ZFS pool and samba server.

Anything that I could replace it for? Preferably 2U height

These aren't short dept and are proprietary, but I am curious about modifying them for specific boards, especially the Supermicro system unit. The HP unit looks awesome, too:

Well I decided to go with separate JBOD and 1u small server. It seem to be cheaper that making custom made solution. I looked at super micro but its not much on sale and its a bit pricey

What JBOD did you choose?
Right now 2 options - MD1420 or NatApp 224C. Still deciding, since I also want it to be quiet(or at least to have option to control fans) and also short depth. For now MD1420 seem to be a better option(although a bit more expensive)

Are there any options for 24x NVMe at all?
I didnt find anything reasonably priced. There are backplane from supermicro for 24 U.2 nvme drive, but I haven't find rest of parts to create DIY solution. And also price would be around ~$1500-2000 too

Alibaba has some that are less than that. But don't know what they'd be with tariffs.

Looks like i might have misread for the price (total price vs chassis?) but this is what i head in mind:

Zhenloong - seems to be relatively respected - amazon us has some of their stuff:

I couldn't find the specific chassis i was looking for but this is their store - and i believe they do customizations.

backplane

also another - i think these guys are also somewhat respected?

And a few others.

Glad to be of help. Feel free to reach out something that looks remotely interesting and see if they can change the backplane if it doesn't exactly fit what you wer elooking for. I believe zhenloong guys will customize if you ask for them - they have some nice looking towers, and racks 0 and i remember asking thme if its possible to make backplane changes and they said yes. Not sure about pricing for custom work, however.

Also- alibaba ui is somewhat confusing at times, but make sure to check options too. Like the first chassisi sent, it has 8 u.2 16 sata/sasoption for example.
