My sense is the 1x E7-8890 V4 is going to be impossible to find. Most of those systems are 4 socket and higher.

All of those except the Opteron will be quite pricey.

quadranet old gen serv with insane price please...
Those dual socket servers can take 400-500W at the outlet mining which is $125/mo+ in power and cooling. Now add to the fact that you have RAM, CPUs, systems to pay for that will amortize to several hundred a month. Add in a bit for space, PDUs, networking and they will not be inexpensive. Anyone selling as a service will also have to add in some profit markup as well as cover cost of underused hardware (e.g. hardware not used for a month or two, customers who do not pay and etc.)

We have/ had many of those configs in the lab so it is not a theoretical cost.

Take the 2P E5-2697 V3, I have them in my Q4 lab cleaning post for $1100 ea. Lowest retail on ebay is Intel Xeon E5-2697 v3 14-Core 2.6GHz SR1XF Haswell-EP Processor - Grade A | eBay

Out of curiosity how do those 2697s compare to the 2696s for mining. I've been thinking about dipping my toe in mining.

renting a Server for CPU Mining is imho one of the worst ideas i heard about.
this will never pay out, it simply can't.

having a Server in colo and let it do some Mining in idle times could pay, but only with a very good power plan.

I genuinely found this to be quite the funny post, however, i do remember a time where i thought CPU mining would be a good idea but it never even comes close to what GPU mining can do.

Pure mining, you are better off just buying Monero and hoping the price will go up.

If you have servers deployed with extra cycles, then very good.

Patrick,

What’s the best/most comprehensive “Mining For Dummies” guide you’ve run across? I have two really high spec idle servers in my rack and 3x 1080Ti’s + 1x Titan Pascal that aren’t really being used. I’d love to play around with it, but havent the faintest clue regarding even the basics...
