i am trying to stave off having to buy a new system until zen3 is out. the current threadripper is a bit of a letdown because of the memory channels (apparently it chokes easily) and possibly its unimpressive single-core floating point performance (fp64). i do turbulence simulations and i need max gigaflops to stay relevant.
my msi mobo has 8 slots and its manual says max 128gig ddr3.
it is possible that my current msi mobo will work with ecc udimms but this is to be perilously discovered. when googling on the subject i found a post of someone trying this on his gigabyte mobo and it got bricked apparently for eternity.
