Hello,
I scored a c7000 chassis locally at what I think is a good price at $270. It included all the fans and power supplies (that run on 110) and iLO and switches I could use, as well as 4 operational blades (BL460c G7 w/ 2xE5620 and 12GB RAM).
My primary purpose is to have a home lab again, and play around with clustering, pxe booting, etc. But in order to fund this, whatever lab equipment I get I will mine Monero with in the meantime in order to hopefully pay for itself.
What's the sweet spot in older Xeons and Opterons when it comes to hashing? The Opteron 6200 series look good, but the supply seems to have dried up and they're around $100 each now. Everything I'm seeing now doesn't seem to be profitable - newer gen blades are very expensive, and older stuff just can't keep up with the power bill (which, for me, is low at $.07 but will increase when I move in the next few months).
Maybe I'll get lucky and find a local surplus auction with a bunch of blades, but that's a long shot. Are there any other places I should look for old blades besides that and eBay?
What do you think is the best move? Again, mining is just to hopefully fund the equipment and power. Thanks in advance for any advice you have.
