Hey,

i'm looking for a 4U chassis with a SAS/SATA backplane for 24 hot swapable 3.5 inch drives. I do only need the case with the backplane with SSF conectors.

i have seen the chenbro RM41824 and the Fantec SRC-4240X07

even used is the Chenbro way more expansive. I will cost something around 500€ includibg the 24 drive caddys (all used).

a new fantec case will cost round about 400€

I need the case to rebuild my home NAS. It is currently a midi tower with 3 x 4 SAS Drive enclousere.

what other cases do yo know? what are you experience with those cases?

Hi, the best choice would be a Supermicro Chassis if you ask me. (The 846 in your case)

it costs 1500-2500€ this is way to overpriced for a home NAS Case without special requirements. I just need a case with a good sas backplane.

846 With 3gbs Expander Backplane witch you can change fo a newer one. This one has Older PSUs. SuperMicro CSE846 X8DTE-F Rev. 2.0 NO CPU NO RAM is without Radiator | eBay

846 with 6GBs Expander backplane and 80 Plus Gold PSUs: SuperMicro SC846E16-R1200B/6GBs SAS Expander/4U/24Bay 3,5"/846/chassis | eBay

846 with 6 Gbs Passthrouhg Backplane and 80 Plus Gold PSUs: SuperMicro SC846A-R1200B/1:1 Passthrough/4U/24Bay 3,5"/846/chassis | eBay

The Nic e part of these Supermicro Chassis is that you can upgrade them later. Newer PSUs or even SAS3 12GBs Expander Backplane are availible. I have Started my Personal Nas in a 6GBs Expander Equipped chassi and bought a 12GBs Expander Backplane of Ebay later.

Supermicro and Chenbro are the only 2 manufacturers I would recommend, stay away from the bottom feeders :) You can get parts and support for them, mod them easily if needed and they are both well built and reliable. It's true that you will pay a bit more for them over the Norco's of this world, but you have to ask yourself, how much is your data and time worth? Whilst it might not be immediately obvious, you do get a lot of precision engineering thrown in for that extra money and peace of mind to go with it :)
