I'm thinking of buying if its a good deal and re-selling it on ebay, etc.. I might actually keep the LTO as i wouldn't ever need to worry about backups again once i figure out how to hook up FC.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I wouldn't buy the Eva's. Too much noise for home and electricity. Those FC drives are not very useful outside the array. The library deal seems pretty good to me.

Well, FC disk enclosure can be used outside EVA4400, if it is M5314C it is 14 disk in one enclosure, you can connect directly to Linux host with FC HBA PCI-X / PCI-e (irrelevant emulex or qlogic card) directly or through FC switch.
Up side you can change disks to 500 FATA 2gb or 450G/600G 10k/15k rpm sometimes you can find such a disk on ebay 500gb FATA is £6-15 (there is 1TB FATA Disks also). I can's say about 12disks enclosure M6314.
Downside only HP disks accept , well if you can change firmware to HP one, enclosure should accept it.
P.S. M5314C is not very noisy (when both power supply connected to 220V) but dedicated room is best!

im wondering if the prices are good enough to try reselling the items on ebay to make profile. I'm considering offering 1k for the tape drive just to see if he takes it. then i might sell some of the tapes and 2nd lto drive to recoupe the cost i paid for it.

The other two deals would be purely to resell, since i have no need for that kind of storage setup at home.

Hey,

Thought I would chime in with an offer since we are on this topic. If anyone is actually interested in getting a deal on EVAs to resell or play with, I will offer a 4400 Controller and 96x 15K 450GB drives for $1,000. You would just need to pay for shipping (or pick them up if you are local). I would also be willing to throw in two Brocade 8000s with FC cables and Brocade 1020 FC HBAs for $3,000.

The problem with these old EVA arrays (I've got a pair of 4400's at work ready for disposal, and a 6400 not far behind), is the amount of power they draw / heat they put out for what you get. Almost 100 15K spindles for $1000 sounds impressive (and looks cool running), but is only going to put out around 2000 iops. A single SSD will easily do many times more than that in a single 2.5" drive instead of a 1/2 a rack worth of gear. Or if its capacity you're after, modern 10TB spindles will again match that entire array in a small fraction of the physical space and power usage.

I wish you luck selling them, but would stay away from buying them for resale.

Look like the EVA stuff wouldn't be worth it. So I'm still considering the tape drive.
I don't know what the real value is. eBay listings show high 4-7k. I'm thinking offering 1k then selling off 20 or so tapes @20 ea and 1 lto drive for 1k. That should pay for the original investment and hba card. Then I should never need to worry about backup storage space ever again. :)
