I'm not sure on those, but very likely they are it.
HT - HGST Touro
HC - Hitachi/WD/HGST Ultrastar
H7&H8 - HGST/Hitachi HelioSeal
NE - Nexsan

I'll set it with question mark. There is too much fluctuation, Dell bought EMC in 2016...so is it Dell EMC = DE ? Does such firmware naming even exist? :D

  2. AH = IBM-SSG
  3. CC = Cisco
  4. DS
  5. DL = Dell

Sorry I am a complete newbie, but are we talking about spinning drives or SSDs? Helium would imply a Spinning HDD, but I didnt realize that spinning drives had firmware to update. Can someone point me in the right direction or set me straight here.

Every piece of hardware needs a portion of software aka firmware running, regardless of the complexity.

Oh wow... makes sense, just never realized that. Or that it could be upgraded/ changed.

Anyone have any advice that is firmware related to buying refurbished EXOS drives on ebay?

Very dumb example for this...you take a matchbox. Then a USB-cable. One side into the PC, other side...mhm hold on to the box or put a match into the plug?
Sure thing it does not work, the USBus cannot distinguish between tree, wood, match brand and the number of matches. It can't even see the status change 'now something's plugged in', even if that worked, the matchbox wouldn't respond to the USBus when asked 'what device are you?'.
Two devices must speak the same language and for the answer alone 'I'm a 2GB pendrive, vendor:sandisk etc.' it needs to have firmware. :)

Or that it could be upgraded/ changed.
That option is not always available for the end-user. If it is not provided by the manufacturer, then the target device does not have a software interface for it. Also, if there is an interface, there is no guarantee that the manufacturer will give you software to flash it, nor will they give you a firmware file, if they have one at all.

Anyone have any advice that is firmware related to buying refurbished EXOS drives on ebay?
Focus on generic drives (with generic firmware) without third party branding, avoid the drives pulled from storage applications to avoid vendor locks. If the seller doesn't mention it or the label doesn't tell, choose another.

If you get seduced by cheaper prices of third party disks, then search around here if you find a success story for exact this model and if it can be reformatted or crossflashed to generic firmware. If not, you could try your luck or regret it. :)

So if my drives firmware is A4GL0003, I assume I can safely flash the A4GNVD05 firmware available now at HDDGuru, for my HUH728080ALE601 model?
I guess drive wouldn't accept generic firmware, but you can try. You can see original firmware name in your drive with wdckit, just use logdump option and open saved file in notepad and find string 'release'

@napalm_atx I’ll look into it this weekend and report back my findings. Hugo tells me the current version, should I rely on it?
Code:
# hugo show

Manuf. Model Serial Interface Capacity Type Firmware
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1) HGST HUH728080ALE601 [removed] SATA 8001 GB HDD A4GL0003
  2) HGST HUH728080ALE601 [removed] SATA 8001 GB HDD A4GL0001

Hi there...

I want to share my logdump results. Four of my five "refurbished" HUH728080ALE601 came with A4GL0003 and one with A4GL0001. Except the one with A4GL0001, all the disks have the same firmware update history. The one disk which cames with the firmware A4GL0001 was already updated to A4GL0003, but later downgraded to A4GL0001.

Here the firmwares:

Name - Release Date - Firmware - Remarks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A4GLX7C2 - 08/22/15 - (X)7C2 - HDD initial firmware
A4GLX7C4 - xx/xx/xx - (X)7C4 - seems to be a beta, only in one disks update history
A4GLXAD2 - 12/14/16 - (X)AD2
A4GL0001 - 06/22/18 - (X)DV0
A4GL0003 - 10/16/19 - (X)E20 - newest firmware release

As you can see, the so called "A4GL0001" and "A4GL0003" are firmwares with the real names A4GLXDV0 and A4GLXE20.

The "X" stand for the release channel, I think. In the E6-dump are the firmware release paths logged, like this:

*** Y:/ccb6p/RDV0/library/ARIESHC84K *** (A4GL0001)

Here stands a "R" for the "X". Probably this is because of the special modifications for the OEM which uses the disks (in this case "GL" ?, or LG).

At the end....the firmware E20 (A4GL0003) is the newest for the "GL", and compared to A4GNVD05 is it much newer, possibly.
