Just inherited a Dell 5820 (x299 lga2066) that came with a w-2133 cpu. What is the fastest, most cost effective CPU i can get for it right now?

Any limitation to the dell 5820 that i should know about?

IIRC, the W-2225 had the highest turbo but the best deals are with the Mac pro parts (W-2150B etc).

W-2225 is quite expensive still at $500 (for only 4 cores) and the single core speed is no faster than -7-8700k
W-2150 seems like a better deal at $190 for 10 cores and not that much slower at single core.

But compared to the 2699 v3 for multicore, they suck for the the price. aside from things like avx-512 and some improved ipc or some instruction, it seems they are not really much of bargain for raw computing power.

This lga 2066 is certainly not a bargain price like 2011 socket

The advantage to the LGA2066 is in the PCIe 4.0 and DDR4-2933 (vs. 2400 on the LGA2011-3), the extra 8 PCIe lanes per CPU, and the twice as fast connection between the CPU and the chipset (DMI 3 vs. DMI 2). Plus, pretty much every LGA2066 board has M.2 slots, often using PCIe 4.0, so no need to get add-in cards, which can be a big cost if your motherboard doesn't support bifurcation.

I went with the W-2275 because it has the fastest single thread performance of any Xeon processor with more than 20 PCIe lanes, and it's got enough cores to do a lot of work in a single socket.

2066 was geared towards the workstation market and not server. This is why it's not much of a "bargain".

For what its worth, the w-2295 is still a beast of a chip but is still way too expensive.

On another note, you need to ensure that your board supports the increased power draw of high end w-22XX chips (160W), or you will be limited to better options regardless of price.

What a shitshow with Dells artificial limitations on which particular motherboard in this machine supports which CPUs. And of course their service reps being clueless about it.
Good luck finding a suitable upgrade.

It's only for 2600 v3.
Speaking of boost, 1680v4 boosts to 4.0. Not sure if would fight for that extra 300Mhz, given the price difference.

I mean W-2175 is fast as long as yr app is not heavily threaded. If it is then, it's better to get two 2699 v3 for less than the price of one W-2175...lol...

There's an all core turbo hack for W-2175?
I haven't heard of one, so the frequency bins will look like this

My bad, I meant to write 2696v3

and you see 14 cores at 3300Mhz ! as i sayd.
W-2175 is going to have 14 cores @ 3300Mhz = 46,200Mhz

The E5-2696v3 is 18 cores @ 3800Mhz = 68,400Mhz

So, it is going to be faster for tasks that only require up 8 cores, and then the ancient E5 is going to start kicking ass :D

E5 v3 went to 18 cores, not 22. Getting max turbo speed on all cores requires modifying the BIOS and that's not always going to be an option. TDP unsurprisingly also goes through the roof. You're also forgetting architectural improvements, so, clock speed is not a 1:1 match for performance. Single threaded performance is going to be much better on Skylake (or Cascade Lake) compared to some 8 year old Haswell CPUs. The W-21xx/22xx series also gets you AVX-512 if that's of any importance.
