Is a 16GB SATA DOM big enough to run FreeNAS ?

Putting together another box and it will consist of 8 4TB drives in a RAIDz2. This will hold media so no ZIL, or SLOG needed. No Dedup either.

Thanks :)

Thanks. Looks like 16GB is good since nothing larger is mentioned. Don't need mirrored boot.

My other FreeNAS box is using a 80GB SSD for a boot drive and only 4.9GB is currently being used. Gonna use the DOM and order another for the other box.

Did you price out the 80GB S3500 vs the SATADOM?

The SSD can be had for <$30 and the SATADOM usually aren't cheap.

just some other idea :D

Yep, I actually picked up a couple of the $30 S3500. :)

But the DOM came free in a SM chassis I bought. ;)

But after pricing the DOMs I think I'll leave the SSD in the other box.

Why not install FreeNAS to a USB flash drive (or two, mirrored), and free up the more valuable SATA port?

I run my FreeNAS box off of a mirrored pair of those tiny SanDisk Fit drives. Works just fine. Boot is a little slow, but meh.

First FreeNAS box I ever set up used a USB as boot drive. After 2 days it took a dump. Decided not to use a flash drive for such a critical role. I'm not going to be using the on board SATA ports for anything other than booting so that's a non issue.

She's up and running. I'm transferring 12.5TB of data to it as I type. FreeNAS installed on the DOM without a hitch. I did have a brain fart that made me waste an hour or two on a permissions issue but got over than hump and it's been smooth sailing since then. The other box has a 80GB SSD for a boot drive and only 4.9GB is being used so the 16GB DOM made a lot more sense.
