Intel Xeon L5618 - Anyone tried them?

The Intel Xeon L5618 seems like it is a slower clock sibling to the L5630. 4 cores and 8 threads w/ HT. Price is good too $125 with heatsink: Intel Xeon L5618 1 86GHz 12MN 5 86GTS Q3NF AT80614005079AA 4 Core Processor Heat | eBay

I could get one of those HP DL180 G6's barebones, put 1 of these in and send to a cheap colo as offsite backup and vpn tunnel.

Bad idea? Would go l5520 but this has AES-NI.

For the price maybe good. Why not an E5606 for AES-Ni

Have to be careful putting newer xeon's into older gear. You can't assume the bios will have the cpu microcode to get it started and operating. While most operating systems can patch the microcode to fix the bugs, most servers will reject or fail with cpu's they do not know.

The G6 line from hp shipped with 3 different 5520 chipsets in revision and the first ones were crippled, as in all the goodies from the 5500->5600 chipset will not present (AES-ni). This is important to know the errata and chipset revision and bios supported for the chip and motherboard. just like desktops. a new cpu comes out and the socket can handle it but if it not in the bios, could be epic fail.
