I spotted quite a few of these CPUs on EBay, some as low as $25.
I don't know if there is a major decommission or how hard it is to find motherboards or how expensive MBs are?

A bit older than E5-2670, maybe not as fast (but half the price), more level 2 & level 3 cache; but can be used in 2x CPU configuration and support up to 1TB ram.
(EDIT: Only 2 CPU configuration and 1TB ram!)

This seller has them for $30

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 2 indicate dual CPU (1 QPI link). So it's a dual CPU for what can be quad CPU motherboards.

I'll agree, it's a good price though.

Also, that motherboard probably won't work without the rest of the system. Quad CPU machines are pretty complicated for Dell/HP, I have an HP equivalent and it has the motherboard, PCI Express board, PCI Express extender, IO board, and memory modules. Also, usually specific power connectors.

You are correct only 2 CPUs on 2870's and only 1TB ram supported

It's very late here:

the E5-4870s are around $60
there are some on auction (but look a little rough)

It is an E7-2870 and not and 4870 so it should be 2 sockels maximum. Pricing on an complete hp systems with 4x4870 and tons of ram is about 700-1000 Euro currently in EU. But the cpu are quite power hungry and not really fast

yeah westmere gen E7.... please don't bother.

I had a quad E7-4870 box and my quad 61xx opteron box stomped all over it. subsequently a dual haswell stomps all over that box...

I'm running a 4 x E7-4870 system, and it's crazy how much heat it throws out the back, even when it's not doing anything.

Thanks @sthsep , @Patriot, and @sno.cn for your invaluable feedback!

Spec look good on paper. But I'm glad I did not bite the bullet and invested in such older technology,
when Haswell CPUs could do much more with less power.

Thanks again for your help! :)
