Hey all. Since this forum and website been very helpfull during the years I wanted to post a little log about my serverbuild. My goal is to switch out a few old servers at work with this lowpower setup. I'll virtualise everything being run on it.

That's it for now. I'll update this post as soon as the last items arrive. If there is anything you want me to test/checkout please just ask.

Also you don't seem to have any RAID-friendly devices. I think I see one NVMe SSD, a tiny SATADOM (for OS??) and one SATA SSD. They're all different sizes. Are you perhaps missing some drives?

But even looking at the hardware - if you do want RAID it will have to be non-ESXi, because you only have one PCIe slot, it's used by the SSD, and ESXi doesn't do Intel RAID. And the DOM is really borderline size for anything other than a bare-metal Hyper-V Server install (not 2012 R2 Core, Hyper-V Server).

Where did you find the MCP-310-50501-0B in stock?

Keljian: The vms will be a mix of normal Windows 2012 R2 servers and this one will also host the pfsense installation. The windows servers will mostly be web and light db servers but also my home setup of plex (Not the data only the OS, data is on synology nas).

DavidRa: I get that it looks confusing since I semi-made-up my mind about going vmware and doing failover via that (we also have veeam installed as backup). So the drives are on purpose but with expansion for 2 more internal 2,5" drives. The satadom is for ESXi, the nvm drive for the most performance heavy stuff (and for fun since i am a hardware geek) and the 960GB sata ssd is just for normal storage.
I plan to add 2 more 960GB drives if needed.

Patrick: I order this from the swedish retailer mullet.se and they have 12 in stock right now: Sökresultat

Paul Bommel, let me get back to you on that one as soon as everything is up and running, still waiting for a few parts.

Keljian, I agree, I made the decision to buy another essentials plus kit license. I like to try new stuff like proxmox but I really lack the time for to much experimentation these days (and if I read right clustering could be a PITA if not working with 3 servers from the beginning).

Trying to get away with a single fan for noise purposes. Rack is in my home office.
The 100L4-Fans aren't noisy?
I've a 5018A-TN7B with two of them in my bedroom...

Keep in mind:
The final noise of the unit is determined from the loudest fan.
If you've only one, it usually has to produce more air flow -> faster spin -> louder
Two of them -> each can run at lower speed -> same cooling effect

I actually don't know how noisy they are yet. Right now I'm just using 2 Noctua 40mm fans as exhaust but have a single 100L4 on the way to replace those with for some better cooling. You're saying that two will be quieter?

Sergio. I am trying but there is alot of delays. I would say Mullet is a very reliable provider thou.
I checked the prices and it's a bit more expensive than Sona , around 100e more for the same setup. I haven't buy them yet, but thats my first option right now, good to know Mullet is reliable. Thanks.

Were you able to figure out how the fan (FAN-0100L4) fits into the fan cage (MCP-320-81302-0B). There are no instructions on how to do it. The cage is supposed to be attached to the chassis which is the bit i understand, but how does one lock the fan into the cage?

trumee: You just drop it in. Plug in rubber grommets and plastic pins into the fan, and gravity will keep the fans in. My fans did not come with pins and grommets though. If you don't have the hardware I think rubber or foam padding will suffice, as it's mostly for dampening.
