For those of you who picked up one of the intel lga1356 boards the other week or another board with the intel sas io port onboard, was able to pick up this 8 port lsi sas model with an offer of 80$. You could possibly try lower as well as I did not get a counter offer given

It is an lsi 2208 based card with 1gb of cache

It is nice in that it will not take up one of your pcie slots. Should act just like if it was an onboard sas controller

Well then maybe it is not such a good price to buy them at if you are willing to sell yours that easily for that price :)

@pyro

I spent last half hours, looking at various images of the motherboard and 8 port lsi sas card from the web search.
I just couldn't figure out where one would mount the sas card on to the Intel S1400FP2 card.

If you have chance later, could you take a picture?
thanks

Sorry my mistake, got the boards confused as i was also looking at SP2 version of these boards which support it. Looks like the FP2 boards dont. Also the LGA1150 boards that were linked around the same time do support these cards

Question for you:
what is the advantage of Patrick's lsi 2308 over the 2208 on these modules, other than it's PCI-E 3.0 vs. PCI-E 2.0? it doesnt seem to matter on these boards; from what I can tell both are spec'd by Intel to be on a pci-e 2.0 x8 interface.

Also, why is there no love for hardware RAID? Am I crazy to even consider a hw raid setup? What are your top reasons to skip it in favor of the (evidently preferred) sw raid?

Thanks.

I just wanted a hardware HBA so I could use it for ZFS potentially. I have a version with the 2208 actually.

With software RAID you usually want a HBA not a hardware RAID controller to limit how many potential components are going to try controlling the disks.
