Nothing wrong with the drive, It's a Seagate ST12000NM0127 12TB drive. I've never had a situation where an SAS controller failed to see a SATA drive. Any ideas?

EDIT - OK, I replaced the Inspur with a Dell H310 and it detected the SATA drive without a problem. Whatever the problem is it's with the Inspur. Maybe it isn't compatible with SATA drives?

I have an Inspur 3008 running SATA drives, via an expander, maybe that changes something. I would have thought it was new enough to handle 12TB disks.

some older controllers can't see disks over certain size.
SAS-1 had a limit of 2TB because of the limited address bits. There were patches for some SAS-1 controllers in IT mode that gave them some of the SAS-2 features, including being able to use the full space on drives larger than 2TB. This update only applies to the SAS command set, so an SATA drive connected to an older HBA is still limited to 2TB.

@Fritz Try updating the firmware on your HBA. This should not be necessary, since it's a fairly modern HBA (at least as far as the 2TB limit is concerned), but it couldn't hurt. You could also cross-flash it to LSI firmware.

After further testing it seems to be an issue with the size of the drive. Any drive less than 12TB works just fine, 12TB and above are not detected. Think i'll try cross flashing to LSI and see what happens.

I didn't have to crossflash my Inspur, it took the LSI firmware directly, even though sas3flash identified it as an Inspur card.

I have an LSI 9300-8e (which is a 3008 chip) in IT mode, and just now plugged in a WD140EDFZ and it was seen just fine. I had done it before, but just wanted to make sure before I posted.

I'm using the latest firmware from the Broadcom site (16.00.01.00), with BIOS 08.37.00.00 and UEFI BIOS 18.00.00.00. You can flash the firmware and BIOS directly to any 3008 card with LSI Storage Authority.

I also do remember some disks not being recognized in certain backplanes - backplanes also having limits.
