OK so I need to figure out something. My main 2P workstation is 34.8dba even with a C2550 fan going next to it right now. I fired up the 8-bay and it was running around 47.6dba. With 16x pin connectors and 4x SATA power connectiors, there is little chance I am going to re-do this wiring. Need to find a solution.
Try this? Amazon.com: Noctua 40x10mm A-Series Blades with AAO Frame, SSO2 Bearing Premium Retail Cooling Fan NF-A4x10: Computers & Accessories

I'm assuming you're running SSDs which presumably don't dump out nearly as much heat as hard disk drives.

I bought a Noctua Redux 80mm for my 5 in 3 NORCO thing, and it quieted the hell down. Had a delta fan in it before.

I've been reading about fans a lot lately, picked up a 2800 RPM 80 x 25mm San Ace PMW fan from Mouser I like. It's pretty quiet @ 2400 RPM.

I also saw this 5000 RPM 40 x 20mm Delta (2 wire) fan that's allegedly 22 dBA with 5.54 CFM and 0.136 IN H2O Static Pressure.

I'm starting to find the lack of info on a lot of my old favorite fan brands annoying, I really like seeing the datasheets the actual manufacturers put out.

I am a copycat, will follow you way to silence my 6 units dock.
If only I had known. I had 2 extra resistor cables on Sunday ($3 at Central Computers.)

I will say that there is certainly airflow going through the front of the chassis now.

Recently I have started to stock up on fan resistors like we all do with case screws.

you can make your own with a bit of math and a 1/2w resistor.

Could always replace the stock 40mm with the Noctua 40mm. They claim they are quiet but haven't heard of any testing of them, so think of it as a dual benefit ;)

I have the 9mm version and the SSDs are fine with the fan turned off, but it might be pushing it with the 7mm version since it has no headroom.

I actually have a few Scythe 40mm fans that I use for projects like this ($7ea on Amazon which is nice). There is also a 4-5db quieter one for around $8. The Noctua one is $15 ea.

On something like this:
  • 2x $3 = $6 for a plug and play make the stock fans quieter
  • 2x $7 = $14 and have to replace two fans with the Scythe fans
  • 2x $15 = $30 and have to replace two fans with the Noctua fans
In the end using a fan splitter I was able to use two resistors for $6 + two Y cables for $4 and have a $10 solution. The fan mod with Scythe would have been $28 and the Noctua one $60, and replacing fans would have taken (much) more time. Despite the fact that I have and use a few Noctua fans, I do think their stuff is significantly overpriced.
