I'm about to move to a new house. After 7 years of using my Verizon DSL modem/router I'm getting screwed and have to go with Comcast cable. I'll no longer be able to use my DSL router obviously. So I'm now in the market for a new one. Here's the catch: all my data related gizmos will be in a small room in the basement and I doubt I'll have decent wireless connectivity out in the yard. Right now I have this giant Hawking antenna mounted on the side of the house which gives me great coverage but none of the new routers appear to be compatible with it. Can I just get two wireless routers and make them have one SSID like schools have? I have found some that aren't too expensive and are DD-WRT compatible. Any other suggestions?

Thanks guys

Nice! Thanks. I'll order up 2 right now and try to sort it all out. I'm also getting a Dell 2724. Then I'm going to wire the whole house with CAT 6. First I've gotta move into the house though. I'm glad those routers will work since they are cheap and I'm about out of money, what with buying a house and a car this week. I'll get back to this thread once things begin to pan out.

If you want something a tad more structured for just a little more money check out Ubiquiti's Unifi series (http://www.ubnt.com/unifi). Small, nice looking, build in power-over-ethernet, management software, and you can grab a 3-pack for only $199. Then you only have to run a cat-5e cable any where you want an access point.

For the yard I believe you can pick up an outdoor rated PicoStation (http://www.ubnt.com/picostationm) and load the Unifi firmware onto it.

May all be overkill depending on the size of your place and yard.

Well I got the E2000's. I have flashed them with Tomato. Would I be able to the PicoStation with them?

Well, almost a year has past. There have been many wild changes in my world but none of them entailed wifi in the yard. I was using a lap top which got a good signal everywhere from the E2000 AP on the ground floor. Now I'm using an Asus Transformer Prime and its wifi range simply sucks. So I can't use it in about 1/2 of my yard. I'm thinking more andmore every day about getting an outdoor wifi AP. Since my router is running DD-WRT can I use one of the Ubiquiti outdoor AP's and still have the same SSID? an I just run cable to a tree or something, mount it, run wire and plug it in?

I think you could do that or buy/ build one that acts as a WiFi repeater.
