Is hyper-v free with the purchase of windows server OS? Are you limited to a certain amount of VMs per windows server version?

Hyper-V doesn't cost extra. There are no limits to the number of VMs you can run, however, you will need licenses for any Windows VMs (included number varies depending on Windows Server edition).

Where would you recommend buying the licenses? I’ve seen some on EBay.
If they're for a home lab, there are plenty of websites who sold them.
If they're for a production environment, I wouldn't dare to buy one outside the "legit" channel.

Windows Server Licensing and Pricing
Each Windows Server STD Edition lets you run two Hyper-V machines on top of it, and Datacenter Edition has no limit to the number of VMs, but for each Server license you need to purchase also CALs.
Sorry bringing up old topic, had exact same question(s).

How do I understand this?

1. Windows Server STD is $1069 core-based. Up to 16 cores. Meaning? I have 2 CPUs 8 core per CPU so it should be OK? ( ntel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 )

2. And next is a question about 2 VMs/OSEs. I need to run inside VMs: 2 Windows servers, 3 Linux
Does it mean I am stuck and can't do that with STD? Also, I think it was like license for 1 guest VM Windows server was already included, not anymore?

Yes you should be ok

You get to run 2 vm's on the same hw with the base key, you can run all of the Linux vm's you want.

Ok. Just to clarify. With same key, I can run host and 2 VMs.
But, in ADDITION - I can run as many other VMs as my hardware permits given I have proper licenses for those?

Windows/hyper-v will run as many windows server vms as your host can handle. The two instances per standard license is relevant if you want to be compliant with microsoft agreements (eg for enterprises)

Yes, I want to be compliant so I was trying to understand what it means. 2 ANY VMs period? 2 Windows VMs and as many Linux as I want?

server 2022 std: License 1 (1 license per 16 cores)
bare metal installation (on host 1) + 2 server 2022 std vms with the same key (fckgw :D)

if you purchase another license (license 2) you can install two vm with license 2 on host 1 or isntall it bare metal on host 2 and host inside there two vms with license 2

Ok. I so it's about license. Meaning if I buy STD license I can run it as host and I can run it as 2 guests.

But it is NOT a limit of guests I can have on hyper V?

Max number of guests/VMs per Hyper-V server is 1024. (not that you would be likely to reach that number of VMs anyways)
