Is hyper-v free with the purchase of windows server OS? Are you limited to a certain amount of VMs per windows server version?
If they're for a home lab, there are plenty of websites who sold them.Where would you recommend buying the licenses? I’ve seen some on EBay.
Sorry bringing up old topic, had exact same question(s).Windows Server Licensing and Pricing
Each Windows Server STD Edition lets you run two Hyper-V machines on top of it, and Datacenter Edition has no limit to the number of VMs, but for each Server license you need to purchase also CALs.
Windows/hyper-v will run as many windows server vms as your host can handle. The two instances per standard license is relevant if you want to be compliant with microsoft agreements (eg for enterprises)Ok. Just to clarify. With same key, I can run host and 2 VMs.
Yes, this is correctOk. Just to clarify. With same key, I can run host and 2 VMs.
But, in ADDITION - I can run as many other VMs as my hardware permits given I have proper licenses for those?
Depends what is the use, right? Devil is in details. It will be free for software development and testing. But if you want to run business off it - then it's not.See if you can get your employer to cover MSDN/VisualStudio Online licensing, then it's effectively free.
