very nice article. but....i hate when hp uses proprietary fan-connectors. why not normal 4pin (or even 3pin) fan connectors so that one canchange the fans for better performance? or for silent fans. why not?

sorry for my words, but in my opinion stupid choice...

Pier consumption up but by how much I wonder... should be a few watts only.
Still think they look like a nice unit.

money no object I wonder if 2 x 64gb udimm (if exists already) and e-2288 or similar could go in....

@Patrick I noticed the upgrade was a storage or network not both, have you(or do you know anyone) who's tried a card like this in a standard windows system? It's not perfect but it would add 10GbaseT and a pair of SSD's.
Already on it. This is not an ideal card though since it is PCIe Gen2 x2 to each SSD. Effectively this is running your Gen3 x4 SSD closer to x1 speeds.

That Liteon power brick looks familiar...more specifically, my t730 thin client runs off a Liteon power brick from an HP 90w Elite docking station. I wonder if HPe is reusing a power brick from HP's 180w 2008 Series dock (or something similar) - my guess is that it's a PA1181-08.
. @Patrick how about a less blurry version of that power brick photo so I can cross-reference with stuff in my stockroom?

I think the actual link is a SGMII from the iLO 5 not a PCIe link from the PCH.

On the other hand, to get a boot device plus 10GbE it isn't bad.

I am very confused by what market the Gen 10 plus would fill. With only one PCI expansion slot, no m.2 NVMe, no USB-C/Thunderbolt, you either pick 10GbE or flash storage. This would work as a VMware Witness Appliance. You could use this for commercial signage but a NUC is a better device.

You could add 2x QNAP USB 3.2 5GbE-T adapters but that pulls this outside the HCL for VMware. It does bring it back in line to be a decent NAS. I could also see this being a competent BDC.

Yes the real shame is missing the chance to add some boot devices / NVMe storage in a decent way.
You can use SATA SSD officially if you need of course , HPE sells the converter kit for about $7 each.

I don’t think 10G is that important on this space though. Nice to have but certainly not essential.

still wondering how low power it is...

Can the CPU be upgraded on these? Does the HPE motherboard support higher end E-2200 series CPUs that stay within the 70-80w thermal limits?

Extensively tested by STH and with lots of advice regarding the best upgrade options.

just my personal thoughts , buy the e-2224 and be happy with 4 higher clocked cores or else if you need more u less you really love HPE and the form factor its easier to get higher power (eg 8-core e-2288) elsewhere more cost effective.
