Tried and failed. Same issue -- ESXi starts to power on the VM, gets ~%46 of the way through that process, then hard locks. No PSOD, no error of any sort, it just stops responding to pings and the console is unresponsive. 
Unfortunately, I think this system is a lost cause for my use, which is extremely unfortunate considering how much cash I have tied up in it.

The only way i was able to make it work was changing the /etc/vmware/passthru.map
I changed the existing entrance for NVIDIA devices from bridge to link and also add a similar line for my ATI card:
# ATI
1002 6818 link false
1002 aab0 link false
# NVIDIA
10de ffff link false
