Pretty good deal considering that it has a CPU on par with an i5-8500T, two storage slots, and a PCI slot with the riser included. Main downsides are the power draw being on the higher side and the form factor is a bit larger than something like an M920Q so it wont fit in a 1U slot. Power supply doesn't seem to be included.

Could pick up an i350-t2 or t4 for $20 ish to create a powerful OPNsense system.

Picked one up...this is a good price (and I have a spare power adapter, and also a USB-C PD adapter for the T640/T740).

I've been eyeing one as an extra desktop. My daily driver is an M1 Mac Mini, but sometimes I just need x64 (and a PCI slot) at my fingertips and not a VM on my Proxmox server.

@Dave Corder care to share details about that USB-C PD adapter for T740? I'd like to get one to be able to power through a power bank to act as a UPS
If you got the connector, you can use a USB-C trigger board to get the 20v. I don't know if HP use a data pin in their power supply but I vaguely remember Dell laptop will run but won't charge without the data pin which doesn't matter in this case.
I also found USB-C to HP laptop power cable

HP laptops and thin clients do use a "sense" pin in its (3-wire) power supplies. Unlike Dell 3-wire supplies which use a 1-wire serial protocol on the 3rd wire to communicate supply capacity, though, HP devices apparently sense a DC voltage as indicative of power supply capacity. An interesting article on this subject is here: HP Thin Clients PSU

The gist of this article is that HP laptops and thin clients use a resistor between the sense pin and the power rail to indicate the power capacity of the power supply; e.g., 65W. By setting the resistor size, you can spoof the laptop/thin-client into believing that a DC supply has any desired capacity.

As a last note: inexpensive power adapters for these devices, with the required blue-tip and supply capacity, are readily available. I bought several (Power Supply AC Adapter For HP t740 Thin Client Desktop Power Cord Cable Charger | eBay) and they work fine on my T740s.

This one looks more like the correct one. "4.5x3.0mm Power PD Charge Cable fit for HP Laptop 18-20V." Same dimension and got blue tip.

Agreed that this converter provides a blue tip that is mechanically compatible with the T740 and other HP devices because the blue tip indicates a plug with particular dimensions. The existence of the blue tip, however, does not guarantee the existence of the required HP sense line.

I hope it works - please report back if it does.

I'm sure HP has a part number for their USB-C adapter as well as the factory power supply. Someone look these up on partsurfer and post the genuine part numbers as I'm sure used version of the real genuine HP parts will be the same price or cheaper than the knockoffs.

Sorry, I was responding to another post and not planning to get one. I do have a HP Elitedesk mini that I can use its power supply to test the thin client when I receive it and will probably get an HP power supply from Ebay if it works out. I do have some USB-C trigger boards and if I can find some compatible connectors around, I will test it now that I know how simple the "smart pin" is.

Thank you all for feedback!
I'll probably get one from AliE as i am in Europe .

Do i understand correctly that most chances of getting this working on T740 would have to be a USB-C to blue tipped adapter?

Just checking, but an F320 can't run in the pci slot in this, can it? Either size or thermal constraint?

Yeah - the option port USB-PD is only limited to the t540/t640. The t655 doesn't seem to have the JST-SH connector for carrying power into the chassis, and neither does the t740 or t755.

Thanks, bought one. Been eyeing ryzen thin clients for ages. Gonna slap a 10G adapter there and run some low power VMs over the lan. All this for less than $100. Not half bad.

What's the max ram? Somewhere on the spec sheets said 32GB.

Bought 2 from AliE and it works, just tried to boot up to POST screen from my Lenovo 32" monitor with USB-C PD port.

Now waiting on the power banks with pass through capability to see if they can provide the t740 with enough current even under load.

Thanks to @Dave Corder and others for making me aware of such possiblities!
