I have a tool for swiping firmware, and the sales give me some lods of Cobra. D2F8, HPD5 ect...
About every 10 minutes, I was able to brush a DKR5C-J60SS or DKR5E-J1R2SS into non-HDS firmware.
Is it possible for you to share the firmware you have?
I have the same discs and I cannot update the firmware.

Hello
I know this is an old thread but I really could use some help.
I have some HGST HUC101212CSS600 1.2tb drives. I converted the to 512b from 520 with no problem but when I try to format them I get nothing but errors. I have 40 of them and they all can't be bad so I'm thinking firmware.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Can you tell me how you completed the convert from 520 to 512?

so most likely drives from a Hitachi VSP and the drives were not properly exported from the platform for general use.
In a bunch of threads here there is purportedly a person (in Russia) who can (for a fee) rewrite the firmware on some VSP drives (you provide remote access) and make them usable as general purpose drives.

Good luck!

search is your friend but I'll save you the effort since I could have been hallucinating when I replied to you

start there and read down. you'll end up following a link off STH. check your drive model. I think you have one of the cobra drives that is called out but again I might be hallucinating at this particular instant. no not might be. probably am. o_O

Try FreeBSD, fastest way could be a bootable nomadBSD from pen drive: NomadBSD

Code:
camcontrol devlist #lists your drives, /dev/ada0-X = SATA, /dev/da0-X = HBA (should be in IT Mode)
camcontrol cmd daX -v -c "15 10 0 0 v:i1 0" 12 -o 12 "0 0 0 8 0 0:i3 0 v:i3" 512 #or 4096 if the disk supports it
camcontrol format daX -v
Success with Seagate and HGST pulled from NetApp, EMC, IBM so far, I think this overrides locks in firmware where normal format to 512 fails.

I tried the steps listed above, sorry to say didn't work for me.

Could you post error message/log or something? Maybe it needs a step more.
Sure it's possible that this firmware is locked to doom, dunno.

Unraid is linux and these are the normal error codes with wrong sector size.

The log with camcontrol on BSD would be interesting.

Prepare a pen drive with nomadBSD, boot it on the machine with this disk. Type commands, make screenshot, login here, upload screen.

Or boot nomadBSD, start sshd, ssh into it. Copy'n'paste commands from above.

I am working on 2 completely different systems and tried the same thing on a second drive to see what happened. It just finished and here is a picture of the screen. I also get the same results in unraid with this drive20231020_143002.jpg
