I'm about to add my 2nd VM host (ESXi) and I will being add more hosts in the near future, so I figured I need to consider piecing together some shared storage for the VMs. I've been searching for a couple of days now, but can't find a concrete answer - I understand local storage for VMs will likely give the best performance, but how much better is it than NFS or iSCSI over 10 GbE (or even 40 GbE) on a FreeNAS server + local storage? What about this same FreeNAS setup, but with a DAS enclosure/disk shelf featuring SAS multipath/dual channel?? What kind of performance difference are we talking here (host's local storage vs NFS/iSCSI w/ 10 or 40 GbE)?

P.S. - This disks I have on hand are 3.5" SATA & SAS1&2 HDDs/spinners, 2.5" 15k RPM SAS2 HDDs/spinners and 2.5" SATA SSDs.

P.P.S. - The VMs (40+) won't be running any database heavy stuff, but I'd still prefer transfer speeds and performance to be pretty good.
