Getting AMD Ryzen Working With Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, 16.10 and older - This will fix your crashes.

One of the biggest issues anyone running Ubuntu will have with AMD Ryzen at launch is simply getting a stable system. For example, if you run Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (AMD64) server you will notice systems crash time to time. We have tried both the X370 and B350 based motherboards in 4 different CPU/ motherboard configurations and from different vendors. It happens.

This is the quick guide on how to fix.

did you try turning off the hyperthread equivalent as a workaround?

I got poor results with SMT off and 4.10.1 so decided that the better option was to just apply the fix and be able to keep SMT active to get the performance gain.

Patrick isn't Ubuntu and other Linux distros still largely optimized for the Bulldozer architecture and not for Zen/Ryzen?
