I think it's about 2x for a fair market value of a used switch with similar port count.
The only redeeming quality could be 4 x 25G SFP28 ports, if one needs that, but i doubt it's worth 2x price increase.
Otherwise you can relatively easily get 2x in port density and still pay less that amount.
OS-wise FS OS seemed nothing special; looked like another clone of Broadcom software.

I think the SFP28 is what makes it worth what it is. That, and it's a current production switch, not a power hungry discontinued 10 year old design. Per the STH review a few years back, this switch only pulls 30 watts at idle.

If they had a multiple available to stack id be tempted, the 4x sfp28 is a bit short for ny need.

If you're after SFP28's look at S5148F-ON with 48 of those (for about the same amount of money as this switch); i suspect it would suck more than 2x of power though.

If i dont remember too wrong from when i looked at that switch, you are looking more at in the 10-15x area at idle.
Id expect it to recover somewhat and cut that multiplier in half with some load tho.

lol ya that 750w is a bit alarming :eek: then again if you need 48 SFP28 ports probably not an issue :D :D

I seriously doubt those 10x-15x figures; all the numbers i've seen were for S5148F-ON fully packed with transceivers, in 400W range.
If we're comparing idle consumption i'd expect it to be in 120-180W range, which is still a lot, or ~4-6x vs S5860-20SQ.
But Dell switch has more than double capacity of FS switch - 2x ports, and all those ports are SFP28 vs SFP+; plus 3x of QSFPs.
So it's more fair to compare it with a pair of FW switches, bringing power imbalance to 2-3x (which is still substantial in the long run).

If somebody has S5148F-ON handy it would be nice to check it's idle power consumption.
I've S4048T-ON (48x10Gbase-T + 6xQSFP with similar Atom inside), which is just under 100W idle;
for a pure fiber S4048-ON (48xSFP+ + 6xQSFP) idle consumption was even less.

I dont remember if i found some good lab examples or if it was the typical number etc, i just remember ruling it out as it was looking to be in the 500w area.
From a quick search now i found a 2 posts of 400w+ in a lab setting, tho not without any detail as to how many and what port usage.

There are some sn2100 listed domesticly here at around 400€ and 600€ tho, so tempted to just get one of those as ive had a good experience with my 40gbe mellanoxes sofar.
