F2uSoe: Is the performance impacted by any of the 3 different ways of connecting NVMe drives.

After thinking that the SuperMicro AOC-SLG3-2E4 was the culprit to hitting the sequential wall, I benchmarked three different ways of connecting the NVMe drives to see if there were any performance differences.

1. super macro card

2. intel expansion cage w/ riser & card

3. PCI slot

Turns out they are pretty much all the same. The PCI version does give you a bit more performance on the writes. However with only a limited number of PCI slots in a server I don’t mind using the SuperMicro Cards or the Intel NVMe expansion cage.



Maybe someone else can post the numbers with the Asus or other hyper kit

as usual CDM does not tell the whole story. the SuperMicro card is clearly better for the reads, and the PCIe version and the 2.5 version trade off on the writes. with the PCIe version winning a few more times
