ESXi 8 storage upgrade from SAS to NVMe

I have an HP DL380 Gen 8 (PCIe gen 3 / no bifurcation) with a PERC card and multiple SAS drives that I need to improve the storage performance on.

I am looking for any recommendations on cheap NVMe raid cards. I realize there is a forum for raid cards, but since the limiting factor here is ESXi 8, I thought it may make more sense to see what people here are using.

I have an adapter card with a single Samsung drive that performs well, but the lack of redundancy is not an option for me.

I also only have one server, so vsan is also not an option.

You can use a ZFS storage VM that improves performance via software raid and caches where you can place VMs on NFS (and manage copy/move via SMB). I came up with this many years ago and offer a ready to use resource efficient template for this, see All-In-One (ESXi with virtualized Solarish based ZFS-SAN in a box)
