Saw this new listing on Ebay this morning. Seems like a good deal.

Duplicate spam post? Why would you ever buy this when newer generation, better equipped systems are $40 more? ZT SYSTEMS 1U SR-00847, 2 *Intel Xeon E5-2620 6-CORE CPU, 2.00 GHz, 64GB RAM, | eBay

Barebones 1366 at $95 when ram included 2011 is $150.
Probably because those sold out in a ridiculously short amount of time once the auction got posted here, then 10 got relisted because they were cancelled, then 3 got relisted either because some were cancelled or they got them working (someone had a few cancelled from their order due to them not working). Also because there's precious little documentation on those servers, no support, no BIOS/FW updates, no drivers, and they won't run Windows or Windows Server (at least 2012 R2 or 2016).

Don't get me wrong, I bought one, but I've been watching eBay for a year for dual 2011 server deals and ones like that don't come up very much.

" and they won't run Windows or Windows Server (at least 2012 R2 or 2016). " why not ?

I run Windows Server 2012 R1 on PE R310.
it's a hustle to install as you need to add drivers to the ISO and such bit possible.

I was referring to those ZT Systems E5-2620 servers won't run them, not the R610s. I have no doubt at all that R610s will run Windows Server. The reason the ZT Systems ones won't is because they have a wonky custom BIOS and Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, and Windows 10 all bluescreen before the first screen of setup even comes up throwing the error "ACPI_BIOS_ERROR"

There's no BIOS updates or FW updates available from ZT Systems, nor that I can find for the Inventec B800 motherboard in them. There have been discussions on the homelab subreddit about ZT Systems servers, and they are usually custom ODM machines with custom BIOS that are purpose built for one thing, and are missing ACPI tables and such in the BIOS that would be there on a 'normal' server. I suspect that is the case here.

R610s are business class servers that won't die. They are goddamn volvo trucks of servers. We use them still to this day as hypervisor's because the part's are cheap and plentiful and you can have 2 or 3 sitting around waiting to swap them out.
