Here my post describing how to build a Rack cabinet on the cheap.
I've been using it for more than a month. I'm living in an appartement so I couldn't buy a big used rack cabinet that you can find on eBay. So I've searched on the net how to build one on the cheap. I found the description of the the Rack Lack using a small table made by Ikea.
The main issue of the Ikea Lack is the legs, they are empty. Only 1 inch on top and bottom is made of wood. So forget about using screws on the legs. Other builds suggest to use a coffee table for 3/4U Rack like Norco 3116. But I already have this coffee table and it's huge and too long.
So I thought why not just assemble two of them so I have enough space for my rack servers and I can put my printer on top.
Now the requirements :
- 2 sets of Ikea Lack at 9.99$/ea http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80104268
- 4 screws with flat head length minimum 80mm
- A Drill and a screw driver.
Step 1:
Assemble one Ikea Lack and reverse it.
Step 2:
Take from the second Ikea Lack just the board.
There is 4 drilled holes.
Use the drill with a 7/64 twist drill bit to go through the board.
Step 3:
Now you can use the screwdriver with the 4 flat screws to assemble the two pieces.
Here a photo :
I've had some foam pad so the rack servers don't transmit vibrations.
Rack cabinet empty :
Rack with 3U Norco 3116, Supermicro 1U Atom D510 and Netgear 24 port
Rack from the side :
