Hello,

I'm in the market for a server replacement at my colo that underpins a pile of VM environments. I keep finding this server, and it keeps clawing at my mind -- what am I missing at this price?

I need the 12x3.5" backplane so I'm not a buyer for this specific box (although I've tried to rationalize it), but I can't figure out why it hasn't been snapped up? Seems rather underpriced compared with the others on eBay and dell outlet, etc.

Hoping someone can tell me what I missed, or failing that, someone can make use of a nice 2U box. :)

At least 1/2 the price of that is the 384GB of DDR4 modules. Gotta be, other than that most of us can/do build comparable systems to that for 1-2K and usually include high end networking such as 10/40GbE ethernet and high end ssd/nvme pools certainly under that pricerange. If it's a turnkey solution, fits your budget, and requirements it is probably still 50% off of list Dell. :-D

The memory modules seems priced fairly low -- 384GB would cost at least 3.5k on ebay listing these days.

You might also want to verify the 384GB memory. It says 384 in the title and the description, but it also says 128 in the item specifications section.

do you really need that much ram for your purpose?

I suppose you can never have too much ram? I guess you can always set up an ultrafast ram drive for cache if your program doesn't use anywhere near that amount of ram?

The item specification also states a 1.6ghz processor which cannot be the E5 2650 V3. It also says no hard drives unlike the title and description. My guess is that the intended build is 2 x E5-2603 V3 plus 128GB of RAM, which is much more in line with the price. If anyone goes for this, I would make sure you are getting what the description says before this ships.

My colo is virtualizing a lot of production apps and CI lanes, so yeah, RAM headroom is something I'd like to stop managing. 384gb would get me to stop paying attention when I spin up a VM... at least for a few years :D Right now I have to "think about it" when I create one. I'd love to throw 16GB VMs around like I was Rip Taylor.

Yeah the 128gb/1.6ghz thing is odd. The descr seems to quote the 2650s and 384 multiple times. I wonder if that's what's seeing the thing passed up?

Seems I'm not too crazy then. I may message the dude just to find out what the truth is. :D
