I want to upgrade my Dell R730xd to 256GB Ram. The Server is Dual CPU.
I am from Germany and used Server Parts, including Memory isn´t exactly cheap here.

So i looked a bit around on Ebay an there seem to be some 256Gb Kits (DDR4 LRDimms) which are okay priced for me.
Those Kits are mostly 8x32 Gb Modules.

I already know that i cannot mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs.

So i looked at the Table of supported Memory configs in the Servers Manual. And it looks like(and is also the present config)
that 8x8Gb Modules are supported. But 8x32Gb Modules are not listed as supported.

I cannot think of a Reason why this should not work. Can someone point me in the right Direction or perhaps confirm the
8x32 config working?

Regards, Christian

IDK about the LRDIMM but if it doesnt show in the manual for the server it's probably not technically supported. I have 256GB using 16x16GB memory. See below.

Ok, so i keep my fingers from cheap LRDIMMS. Both Processors in the Server a V4s.

There seems to be support for 8 DIMMs (4 per CPU) an that is the actual Config, but they are 8Gb Modules.

One kit for example is 8x Micron
MTA36ASF4G72PZ-2G3B1, which are dual ranked and should work if
the Server supports 32Gb x8 config.

@RolloZ170: I have that Manual, from the Manual:

So 8 by 8 works, all 4 Channels per CPU are populated. From the same table:

So 256 seem to be supported only with 16 x 16Gb Modules. At least according to the Manual. Is that a thing for Servers?

  • 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB dual rank (RDIMMs)
there are many other theoretical configurations. if you don't see 32gb says not it is not supported.
there may limitations with some V3 ( only 8gb rank size, 32GB dual rank not supported )
