OK. It looks like your board has some notable differences from the one(s) being discussed more recently (in this thread).

Interesting that a single NVME is occupied by all the SATAs, second one is free.

And, since you didn't mention it (and I can't see it), yours (probably) doesn't have the x1 PCIe slot.

Oh well ... (I never even thought of buying any of these boxes, just "academic" interest.)

There is a hidden USB-C inside the chassis, propably that's another lane.
Can't say for the latest one though.

To be honest, I'm not 100% happy with the box.
There are questions to the cooling, two neighbroring drives get up to 49c.
Plus I'd rather have two NVMEs in RAID1 as a cache, then a single drive, and cold backups.

However I may find usb-c an interesting uption for a coral TPU dongle.

Anyway, If I'd have a chance to re-pick, I'd get a J6413 one with an extra PCI-E for possible 10Gb/s upgrade.
But since I already have it, sticking with the box I have already

I ended up getting one of the newer units with the N6005. It seems to be pretty solid but i'm not sure about the power supply and the fans also seem to run rather loud but that isn't totally unexpected.

Looks like it is rated for 150W? seems like for 12v rail its rated at 10 amps ~120w and combined 5v,3.3v, and 12v is 140w. I'm somewhat confused by how they are labelling this. I've attached an image of it below.

Been lurking for a while now on this forum and first time signing up to ask. Sorry this as this is my first post. How did you manage to open the case up to install RAM and NVME drives? I see 4 screws in the bottom, but which ones on the back panel are also needed?

I feel silly now. The same four screws on the bottom by the feet is correct. It's just the rest of the case is super tight fitting.

I'm planning a possible 6 bay truenas scale deployment and this chassis could be something that would work for me. What did you end up installing in this chassis? Did you roll out truenas or something else? Any gotcha's you ran into? Cooling issues? And lastly, thanks in advance!

I have installedTrueNAS Core. Regarding cooling, since the fans are running full speed, it does sound pretty loud. All the fans are connected to a motherboard fan header and I believe it does support PWM, at least with the right software. However, I have not been able to determine how to do that in TrueNas Core. FreeBSD likely doesn't have support for that. I also tried Linux but possibly with a kernel that's much too old for the hardware here, so possibly that the fan control in Linux may be available in more recent kernels. I replaced the included case fans with a slightly quieter 80mm/92mm fans from Arctic, which can daisy chain so I don't need the included breakout cable the original fans are connected to.I am looking an alternative way to deal with the fan speed.

Another thing I noticed is that the realtek NIC isn't detected by TrueNAS core, but the two intel NICs are working. All three NICs are detected when I tested with Linux. I don't know how the console port works here.It's also RJ45 and the tab faces the otherway as compared to the other 3 NICs. I would likely never use it but would be interested in knowing what it can be used for and how to use it.

I was considering something like a Terramster or even a device from ixsystem directly, and one that fully supported my own OS. I thought this would be ok for the money, and while I do think the build is decent I am still disappointed with the fans. The drive sleds are secured with a screw, which is quite different from the previous server I had. Overall, I am fine with the device and it would likely become my main storage at home.

For the OS, I am not married to a particular OS. I had sorta "rolled my own" before in the past with Debian and ZFS and it worked until it didn't due to either negligence on my end or the fact that my drives were 6 years old. I wanted to give TrueNAS core a spin since ZFS is a "first class" filesystem in FreeBSD. I may still give TrueNAS Scale a try.

I've had luck with the Arctic fans before. I will be testing them out with the Noctua NA-FC1 controller. I'm still waiting for my order to arrive. My previous server had one loud fan that I replaced with an Arctic and it was like night and day.

Case isn't too crammed, but the wiring isn't the most tidy and I am personally not great with that either. However, I am sure with enough zip ties or velcro straps, it will look nicer. Since I removed the case fan power splitter cable, there is even more room inside.

CPU temp averaging 48 C. Spinning drives across all 6 average 44C. NVMes are a little warmer at 48C.
Ambient/room temp is currently around 26 C or there about.

I am not currently doing a lot with it, but I did transfer about 9T of files to it when I first set it up but I don't see a way to see the historical data.

I bought the one with the J6413 CPU. I added 6*14TB WD and went with OpenMediaVault. I added a 4TB NVMe for systems and containers, 64GB of memory and a 10GB NVME to Ethernet card as I have a 10GB switch. Also I bounded the 3 * 2.5GB ethernet for load balancing. Using RAID 6 with EXT4, I can reach 800MB/s R/W, although it is not sustained. I was able to install Plex, PieHole and Twingate connector. So far it's been good.
I don't really like that the drives are not easier to get out/in and the fans are a bit on the louder side but I'm going to buy some Be Quiet! ones and see if that helps. Overall: NAS $320 on black Friday, $100 for memory, $774 for drives and $90 for 10GB ethernet. Not cheap but cheaper than a Synology or QNAP equivalent.

So I changed the fans and it made a small difference. The thing is all 4 fans are plugged in the same connector. Sure this is a 4 pin PWM connector however the splitter is only 3 pins so the fans are full speed. I guess it's ok as they have different sizes 80mm for the front and 92mm for the back.
I've noticed that you need to remove both fans in the back and set the top one first through the bottom fan opening or else you won't get it out.

Drive temps are 28/29C and 36C for the NVME, pretty descent.
