those statements seem overly dramatic for the content of the article. the mentioned lacking defense mechanisms in routers are mostly secondary defense mechanisms; and would mostly apply when primary mechanisms are lacking, or the attack surface is unnecessarily exposed. you can't really compare the defense mechanisms of desktop OSes to that of network appliances; at least not directly. that said, i believe in defense in depth, so the points are valid, but the presentation seems to be aiming for dramatic effect.
