The 846A backplane seems to be a "segregate" backplane or "directly attached" SFF-8087 backplane. However, how exactly do you use this with internal raid cards that have 2 physical connectors? Do you still only need one SFF-8087 cable?

The A/B backplanes are similar to the TQ backplanes, it is a 1 to 1 connection. Rather than individual sata ports on it, it has grouped 4 sata connections into one SFF-8087 connector. Most controllers only support 8 drives without expanders, so if you need to connect more than 8 drives to a single hba or raid controller you will need an expander.

So in your case you will need two cables and that will allow you to plug in 8 drives.
