What's the best value SAS3 chassis for 40+ disks? Something modern, not too power hungry, well supported and has remote IPMI to turn off/on?

CSE-847E1C-R1K23JBOD fits the bill but is £1500, anything better value out there?

There were "dumb" (no ipmi) 60 and 90 bay chassis for under 1000$ precovid (hgst/wd 4u60)

Do you really need a single chassis for 40+ disks or would daisy chaining multiple jbods (24 or 12 bay) also work?

Would also work but I assume not be cheaper.

Yes, there are great NetApp DE6600. I am in the market for one of these now, and it seems to hold 70 drive in the same 4U. However, it does seem to require the purchase of 2x controllers , which can be the SAS2 or SAS3 variety -- and the SAS3 seem quite expensive at over $1000 each.

The drive shelf is a couple years old (2018?), I have considered getting one, but can't justify the controller cost yet. Your SuperMicrio build there might take it for the value -- the NetApp chassis for the ease of use

Thoughts?

Aren't thses 60 drive enclosures very noisy? I am also not sure how someone can handle them alone.

Well in that case they are not good for home usage unless you live in a warehouse

"Not too power hungry" don't think this is that relevant for a 40+ disk chassis... ;)

Personally I'd go with multiple 847 deals I find on ebay, and set it up (it's home use afterall) so I don't need two on at once ;) that'll save the power.
